06:40 pm: Just another hot Sat baboon, I mean, afternoon!
My gf has fallen asleep on the couch after another busy day at work and playing softball, so I'm bored and in front of the PC again :)

So, what was the highlight of my past week!?

Last Sunday I went to the Big Day Out, by myself. Do you know how weird that is?! My gf is saving money for our wedding and wasn't 100% keen on the lineup, and my usual wingman is in the bloody UK, and just about all my other mates have kids now. So whereas even just a few years ago we'd have 10-15 people there, this year the only people I knew going were a mate's wife, a couple of my employees/friends, and one mate of mine who'd never normally go, but went with his new gf. Now the only issue is, my 2 staff listen to different music to me, so the opportunity never really happened. As for my other good mate, he never really gave good instructions as to where he was! I think he wanted to be left alone :)

So, did I still enjoy myself? You bet. I just moved round all the bands I wanted to see, listening to a few songs here and there and moving on. But I have it was very weird not being able to enjoy it with people you know. The longest conversation I had was to a girl who asked for a look at a timetable, and some bloke who wanted to fight me because he was pissed and aggressive. Unfortunately as night sets in, sometimes the BDO can get a bit ugly as the booze and the heat start to wear people down. I saw a lot of people get thrown out of the drinking area come night time, and was very glad I wasn't security.

Annnnyway. The bands, and who I chose to see. I arrived near the end of Faker, and although the lead singer is somewhat of a knob, they sound great. Gerling were on next, and I think they disappointed a few people with their move back to guitars and away from synth. They can play an awesome half set some days, but usually disappear into a drugged out haze for the second half. They kept it together pretty much today though, and I quite enjoyed the set, particularly their new Mexican tune Hey Senorita :) Next on were Magic Dirt, with a set that was half great, half wandering background music. Jeez Adalita is hot though :) Pity about Mudvayne. That they played that is. That was my lunch time, and my first intake of food that was overpriced and bad for me :)

Next up we had the fine lads from Wolfmother. Saw them at Rockit and quite enjoyed them, same around this time, although I wandered off to the back stages half way through. Caught the last few songs by Sarah Blasko. I'm not the hugest fan, and she dances like she has Parkinsons or something (no offence to people with Parkinsons!), but her voice is great. Next was a few songs from End of Fashion, local guys that are pretty good. There I ran into the only person I knew all day, someone else in my industry, and someone I tend to run into in random odd places. Next off the rank was the Magic Numbers, a UK 2 brothers/sisters outfit, who basically look like fat hippies, but to be frank provided my "moment" of the Big Day Out. The moment is that sublime point when you listen to a song and it just takes you to another emotional place. Call me a sop, but I love my music. Great voices, great playing, great vibe, my pick of the day. Unfortunately my idols, the Kings Of Leon, were starting to call, and I had to fight my way back to the main stages.

The KOL are probably best off on a small stage like a couple of years ago here where they played an awesome set, but they're way too popular now. Everyone was singing along though, so it still made for a good set. Now, I hate to say but I abandoned the Living End next and disappeared off to see the Beasts of Bourbon out the back, and my mate Tex. Tex is now in his forties, and still looking great, whereas his old band look like fossils, but by God do they still rock! Tex is a great front man, and can punt a water bottle about 40m into a crowd, repeatedly. I think he'd prefer a night time venue and beer cans tho :) I wandered off eventually and fed myself again, it's important you know. Mmm, satay, rice and spring rolls :)

I caught the end of Living End, and they sounded good, but now it was time for Franz. I thought they were a bit bland quite honestly, but you couldn't deny they still sounded good and the audience loved them. Next came the Iggmeister and his original band, the Stooges. Erm, they're beyond fossiles into one foot in the grave, but they still play great, and realistically that's all they need to do, with Iggy, now almost 60, still bouncing around like a crazed lunatic. It was all his old music, not his solo stuff, so I didn't know much, but it was interesting to see him again. So. Finally. Probably one of my favourite bands of the last few years, the White Stripes. Jack is an incredibly talented guy - great singing, great song writing, great guitar playing, great piano playing, even great Xylophone playing, I kid you not :) He and Meg put on an awesome show, and had the crowd eating out of their hand. On my way out, I stopped on the back stage to hear a couple of songs from Shihad, great as usual, but I needed to be on my way for my lift :)

Hmmm. That's a lot of drivel above, but that was my day. It was funny seeing people who I watched one band with reappear at other bands or just somewhere on the grounds, and I saw some people 3 or 4 times. But none of my mates. What a weird but good day. With the stubbie holder I bought my gf in one pocket, and less money in the other, I found my way out, tired, but satisfied, to get a nice smooch from my ever loving gf who came to pick me up :)

Monday was a write off at work I'm afraid, even though I didn't get badly sunburnt. I must be old :) More on the rest of the week when I feel like typing more!
